Phylum Arthropoda (most diverse), huge phylum, over 1 million are arthropods; insecta is the largest class.
Open circulatory system
blood filled cavity, hemocoel
tagmatization
exoskeleton of chitin
mouth parts formed of chitin
appendages highly jointed and highly modified
Four SubPhyla:
SP.Trilobita (every body form has two longitudinal furrows that divides into three segments)
SP.Chelicerata - feeding parts (chelicerae), spiders, scorpions, horseshoe crabs, ticks, mites
diagnostic:
no antennae
appendages 3-4 used for walking, uniramous (one appendage off the base)
SP Crustacea - diagnostic, mandibles, not chelicerae
biramous appendages
two antennae
thoracic appendages (walking)
