Function of Integumentary System
Contagious Skin Conditions
- Boils (p.4) - localized bacterial infections of the skin; caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). One is called Furuncle; a cluster is called a Carbuncle
- Etiology: caused by staphylococcus
- Signs and Symptoms:
- Treatment:
- Massage? client with no sign of systemic infection may receive massage, but NEVER ON OR NEAR the lesion.
- Cellulitis (p.6) - streptococcal infection of the cells in the skin
- Etiology: once streptococcus gets under the skin, the local infection may become systemic, involving first the lymphatic and then the circulatory system. Once the bacteria gain entry, they produce enzymes
- Signs and symptoms
- Massage? This is a condition involving skin damage, a highly contagious bacterial infection, and the risk of blood poisoning if the infection should spread into the circulatory system. It systemically contraindicates massage until all signs of infection have passed.
